AI should be for everyone
We will be blunt about it. The most consequential technology of our lifetime is being built right now, and the ability to run it sits with a handful of frontier labs and a handful of cloud providers. A small number of companies get to decide who receives intelligence, on what terms, at what price, and what is allowed to pass through it. Anyone who claims to know exactly how that plays out over the next decade is guessing. We are guessing too. We just know which way we want it to lean.
We started BuildPrivateAI to run these models ourselves, on hardware we own, in a room we can walk into. Then we started testing in the open and writing down what we found, so anyone curious could walk the same path.
The tap of intelligence
Picture intelligence flowing through a tap that somebody else owns. They set the pressure. They decide when it runs full and when it slows to a trickle. They can watch everything that passes through it. They can raise the price on a whim, and they can shut it off for reasons you will never get to see. We would never quietly accept that arrangement for our water or our power. Intelligence is going to matter more than either of those, and it is drifting toward exactly that kind of chokepoint.
That worries us, in the plain way you worry when too much leverage piles up in too few hands. Sovereignty over intelligence is the answer we keep coming back to. Keep a real copy of the capability close to home, under your own roof, answerable to you.
So we run our own hardware
That is why we buy the cards, rack the boxes, and run the clusters ourselves. We push them until they fall over. Some of it is expensive. A lot of it is finicky in ways the polished demos never admit to. We think those rough parts are the most useful thing we can document, because the distance between a number on a launch slide and a model actually serving in your home lab is where almost everyone gets stuck.
We publish what we find
This field is young, and most of what is known about running private AI lives in scattered forum threads, half-finished gists, and the heads of the few people who already worked it out. We would rather have it written down. So whenever we run something, we publish the whole recipe. The hardware, the settings, the throughput, the real numbers, and an honest verdict on whether it was worth the trouble. If a result cannot be reproduced from what we wrote, we did not actually finish it.
Build your own lab
The quiet goal under all of it is to see more people running their own setups. A student with one secondhand gaming GPU. A researcher with a spare workstation under the desk. A small firm that simply does not want its data leaving the building. Every person who learns to do this is one more person who can think alongside a machine without asking anyone for permission. You do not need our scale to begin. One card, a free weekend, and a bit of curiosity is enough to take the first step.
What we believe
So here is where we land.
We believe intelligence should belong to the people who use it. We believe the know-how to run it should be shared openly while the field is still young enough for that openness to count. We believe the most honest thing we can offer is to test on our own hardware and show our work in full. And we believe a technology this important belongs in as many hands as possible, for everyone to take part in and benefit from.
